Glimpsing the past: Saskatchewan Indigenous photo repatriation

May 30, 2018 @ 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm

This event highlights photo repatriation projects being undertaken by First Nations University of Canada, the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan History and Folklore Society. The projects aim to reconnect Indigenous peoples of Saskatchewan with photos taken in their communities between the 1870s and 1970s. Speakers will describe these collections (including studio portraits, pow wows, rodeos, parades and snapshots of everyday life), share lessons learned on the importance of community-based archival work and provide information on how to access collections. We will also hear from First Nations community elders and FNUniv students who have engaged with these collections.

Speakers: Nadine Charabin, Manager, Reference Services, Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan; Paula Daigle, Librarian, First Nations University of Canada; Kristin Enns-Kavanagh, Executive Director, Saskatchewan History & Folklore Society; Andrew Miller, Indigenous Studies Professor, First Nations University of Canada.
