SUMMARY:Standards and Guidelines/Design Guidelines Workshop
DESCRIPTION:  \nApril 19:   Standards and Guidelines and Neighborhood Design Guidelines   \n9:00 am – 4:00 pm \nIt is often necessary to make changes to heritage buildings so that they can continue to have a viable use.  But\, what kinds of changes should be allowed?  The April 19th workshop will introduce participants to two tools that take the guesswork out of these decisions.  The Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada is a nationally recognized manual that uses a “recommended – not recommended” approach to guide decisions about alterations to heritage buildings and other historic places.  The workshop will also explain how to use the ministry’s new Design Toolkit to create community‑generated design guidelines\, another tool for making decisions about changes to historic and non‑historic buildings\, infill development and public realm improvements in historic neighbourhoods. \n  \n  \nThese workshops will be valuable learning opportunities for communities implementing a Main Street program\, and for any other organization that owns\, uses\, manages or regulates historic places.  Both workshops have also been certified for professional learning credits by the Saskatchewan Professional Planners Institute.  The workshops are designed so that they can be taken on a standalone basis\, but attendance at both is recommended for maximum benefit. \n  \nPre-registration is required for both workshops although there is no registration fee.  Please note that no lunch will be provided. \n  \nBoth workshops will be held at: \nSt Mary’s Anglican Church \n3337 15th Ave\, Regina \n  \nSeating is limited and will be booked on a first-come/first-serve basis. \n  \nTo register please follow the appropriate link:  \nStandards and Guidelines/Design Guidelines Workshop \nWednesday\, April 19\, 2016 \n9:00 am to 4:00 pm \nhttp://gos.fluidsurveys.com/s/2017-heritage-standards/

SUMMARY:Community Heritage Inventories and Statements of Significance
DESCRIPTION:April 18:    Community Heritage Inventories and Statements of Significance \n9:30 am – 4:30 pm          \n  \nWorkshop participants will learn how to create a community heritage inventory and how to write a Statement of Significance.  A heritage inventory is a fundamental planning tool that will enable you to identify and evaluate the historic places that exist in your community\, and to make well‑informed decisions about their protection and development.  A Statement of Significance (SOS) is a valuable communication and management tool that explains why a historic place is important\, and identifies those elements of the place that should be preserved. \n  \nThese workshops will be valuable learning opportunities for communities implementing a Main Street program\, and for any other organization that owns\, uses\, manages or regulates historic places. \n  \nTo register please follow the appropriate link: \n  \nHeritage Inventory/Statement of Significance Workshop \nTuesday\, April 18\, 2016 \n9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. \nhttp://gos.fluidsurveys.com/s/2017-Statement-of-Significance/ \n

SUMMARY:University of Regina launches The Canada 150 Lecture Series: The Making of Canada
DESCRIPTION:A new public lecture series at the University of Regina will mark the 150th Anniversary of Confederation and the birth of Canada in 1867. The Canada 150 Lecture Series: The Making of Canada features six lectures over four days\, starting on January 19 with Canadian historian Christopher Moore’s lecture: “A Living Tree? Canada’s Constitution 150 Years Ago – and Today.” Moore has been called Canada’s most versatile writer of history. The Toronto-based writer has been presenting Canadian history to non-specialist audiences through many media for 20 years. \nMore than recounting events leading to Confederation in 1867\, the series of six lectures will reflect on the spirit and principles of the original dreams of the founders of Canada. The lectures consider how those goals and aspirations for a new country have played out in the past 150 years\, and how they might be updated to reflect the very different society in which we now live. \n“The Canada 150 Lecture Series aligns with the University of Regina’s commitment to our communities by asking important and timely questions that help make Canada’s history\, and its future\, relevant to all its citizens today\,” says President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Vianne Timmons. \nAll lectures start at 7:30 p.m. and are followed by a reception. There is no charge and everyone is welcome. \nFollowing is a list of The Canada 150 Lecture Series. SUMMARY:The First Tiny House
DESCRIPTION:Regina’s first tiny house was actually built 135 years ago\, it provided the basic necessities for survival and comfort that our present day popular tiny houses do.Have you ever wondered what those early homes were like? \nJoin us for an informative and entertaining evening with music\, photos and stories as we learn about life in those early tents\, soddies and homestead shacks. John Robinson\, Principal Designer at Robinson Residential Design\, designed and built Regina’s first Tiny House. This Tiny House was displayed at the 2016 Home and Garden Show and featured on a HGTV episode\, “Journey to the Jamboree”. John would be the first to say that it wasn’t actually Regina’s FIRST tiny house\, so his talk will provide a fun and interactive look back at some of the tiny homes that the earliest settlers of our province lived in. \nRefreshments provided.
