SUMMARY:Melfort to host Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls conference

I didn’t look back\, I kept on going\, working and whatnot.” \nVal Smokeyday of the Kinistin First Nation will also be on hand to share her MMIWG story. \nTo register for the conference\, you can call the Riel Centre at 306-752-4950. \nLunch is provided\, and registration is free.

SUMMARY:Regina In 1912: The Mawson Plan And Its Cultural Context
DESCRIPTION:Wascana Park\, long regarded as the “jewel” of Regina\, evolved from humble beginnings to become one of the largest urban parks in North America. \nFrequently credited as an inspiration for the park\, Thomas Mawson’s plan for Regina included picturesque urban “vistas” and a system of radial roads leading to a vibrant downtown at the city’s “heart”. By 1912\, cultural forces such as the rise of the automobile and radical innovations in arts\, literature and fashion would begin to deconstruct the centralist paradigms of the past and alter what had become the typical North American city. \n\nThis interactive event will explore the influences which shaped Mawson’s practice and bring to life the diverse sights and sounds of Regina in 1912 through images\, discussion and popular sing-along tunes of the era. \nAlex MacDonald is an Associate Professor of English\nat Campion College\, University of Regina. He teaches 19th and 20th century literature\, and a Humanities course in utopian literature and thought. His research interests also include popular songs in relation to literature. He has written and presented two one-person plays in the Regina International Fringe Theatre Festival.

SUMMARY:Struggle without Rest: The Spanish Flu in Canada
DESCRIPTION:In the summer of 1918 the Spanish Influenza emerged from the battlefields of Europe. Where this strange disease came from was unknown\, as was how to treat it. By fall it arrived in Canada and in October\, 1918\, it arrived in Saskatchewan. By 1920 it took the lives of over 100 million people.\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\nThis exhibit shows the stories of the Spanish Flu\, as well as two lectures about the Spanish Flu in Regina on March 22 and 27.\n\nThe exhibit is hosted by Defining Moments Canada\, and the space is provided by the Queen City Collective.

SUMMARY:Indigenous Economic Development Day
DESCRIPTION:Join SEDA and the Saskatchewan First Nations Economic Development Network (SFNEDN) in celebrating May 6 to 11\, 2019 as Economic Development Week in the province. Indigenous Economic Development Day is May 6\, 2019 \nWe encourage you to download\, share and utilize the ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT WEEK TOOLKIT  throughout the year. \nCalendar of events for this year’s Econonic Development Week  add your event! \n  \nAs part of the 2019 Economic Development Week\, we are excited to launch the first Provincial BUSINESS WALKS. \nA “Business Walk” is a day dedicated to learning more about your local businesses through face-to-face interviews on their turf. Local leaders and key community stakeholders visit a large number of businesses with the hopes of gathering the knowledge they need to help their community and strengthen relationships. Consider a Business Walk the foundation of building relationships and networks over time. Ongoing events and reporting will help keep everyone up to date and inspired to foster a stronger business and friendlier business climate. \nYou are typically designing your Business Walks Program to: \n\nUnderstand the issues and opportunities of your existing business community\nQuickly diagnose firms on the brink of greatness or that may be at risk\nBuild long-lasting and effective working relationships between decision-makers and local businesses\nIncrease awareness of the programs and services offered by the community\, economic development office\, and other partners\nRecognize the impact and value that you place in your local businesses\nIdentify those businesses that may require assistance\n\nWe suggest First Nation\, as well as non-Indigenous communities\, showcase their urban land developments and how they are supporting Indigenous and non-Indigenous businesses. \nOur Business Walks Toolkit will be available in March to help you implement and report on your own Business Walks. It complements the comprehensive Business Retention & Expansion Implementation Guide available on request to SEDA members.
