DESCRIPTION:Preserved at the Provincial Archives are wartime records created by Gladys Matheson\, a Nursing Sister with the Canadian Army Medical Corps (CAMC) during the First World War. The exhibit “Oh\, Oh\, Oh\, It’s a Lovely War: Gladys Matheson’s Memories as a Nursing Sister” shares a selection of these wartime records including photographs\, diary entries\, autograph book sketches\, and sound recordings. The exhibit can be viewed in-person at the Provincial Archives’ Reading Room located in Regina at 2440 Broad Street. \nInterested in learning more about the history of Nursing Sisters of the First World War as well as Gladys Matheson and her wartime records? Join the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan and guest historian Mélanie Morin-Pelletier from the Canadian War Museum on November 6 at 1:30 pm for a one-hour virtual presentation. \nThe one-hour virtual presentation will be conducted via Microsoft Teams. SUMMARY:Stories of Veterans: A Tribute to Military Service in Saskatchewan
DESCRIPTION:We are honoured to be hosting a lecture on Thursday\, November 7\, at 7:00 PM at The Artesian to commemorate the service of Saskatchewan’s military veterans. \nSpeakers: \n \nMark Coté is an information junkie\, scientist and instructor at the Department of Geography & Environmental Studies at the University of Regina. He is passionate about both family and aviation history — especially that concerning RAF Bomber Command and his father’s RCAF service in WWII. He is the author of That Lucky Old Son: Re-discovering my father through his World War II Bomber Command and POW experiences. Mark will share the story of his father Leonard\, who enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War\, ultimately serving in the 158 Squadron of the Royal Air Force. He was gunned down over Holland\, and spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner before returning to Saskatchewan. \n  \n \nJames (Jim) Pratt is originally from the Muscowpetung Saulteaux Nation. He served 2 years with the RCMP in the 1970s as a band constable\, before joining the Regina Police Service (RPS). He retired from the RPS in 2008 as a corporal of 27 years. He also served for 19 years as a reserve field military officer in the Canadian Armed Forces. Now an instructor in the Justice Studies program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic\, James works alongside Treaty 4 elders as a traditional helper. He will be speaking about his service as well as that of his father’s\, William Pratt\, who served in the Second World War. James continues to share his traditional knowledge both in and out of the policing world\, serves on several community boards\, and advises the policing community when asked to do so. \nJames is married with 2 sons and a daughter\, 9 grandchildren\, and 2 great-grandchildren with whom he spends lots of time. He enjoys hunting\, fishing\, and sharing his traditional knowledge with young people. \n  \nAll are welcome! This event is free to the public\, though a $10 donation is suggested to support Heritage Regina’s educational programming. We will also be collecting donations for the Royal Canadian Legion’s Poppy Fund. \nThank you to the Royal Canadian Legion – Saskatchewan Command for sponsoring this event. \n  \nMark Coté will have copies of That Lucky Old Son available for purchase after the lecture (cash only).

DESCRIPTION:Carol LaFayette-Boyd from the Saskatchewan African Canadian Heritage Museum Inc. will highlight the history of people of African descent since their first documented arrival in Saskatchewan. \nLecture is free to the public! Donations are gratefully accepted – suggested donation of $10 per person to support Heritage Regina’s educational programming. \n  \nAbout the Speaker \nCarol LaFayette-Boyd\, a second generation Canadian\, was born May 17\, 1942 on a farm near McGee\, Sask. Carol studied psychiatric nursing at the Saskatchewan Hospital – Weyburn\, and after finishing her training worked at The Monroe Clinic in Regina. She ultimately finished her Bachelor’s of Social Work in 1985\, after which she worked in Special Foster Homes before retiring in 2005. At the age of 50\, Carol participated in the Masters Track Meet held in Regina and has been ‘hooked’ ever since. She holds or held Saskatchewan\, Canadian and world Track records for her age groups. Carol was volunteer executive director of Saskatchewan African Canadian Heritage Museum Inc. (SACHM) and is now treasurer.

John Robinson fills Darke Hall with imagery and music as he presents this snapshot of the Queen City of the Plains. \nThis lecture is free to the public! In 1996 he incorporated Robinson Residential Design\, a firm providing custom residential and design services to homeowners\, builders\, and developers\, where he is now the principal designer and partner. John’s design projects have been featured on HGTV and in TV documentaries. His interest in historical homes has taken him across North America to better understand the importance of good design. John is currently serving on Heritage Regina’s board of directors. Donations are gratefully accepted – suggested donation of $10 per person to support Heritage Regina’s educational programming. \n  \nAbout the Speaker \nDr. Nadya Foty–Oneschuk is the Interim Director of the Prairie Centre for the Study of Ukrainian Heritage at St. Thomas More College (University of Saskatchewan)\, serves as the Chair of the Certificate in Ukrainian Studies\, and is a lecturer in Ukrainian culture and language. Nadya was recognized twice with the campus-wide University of Saskatchewan Students’ Union Teaching Excellence Award. Nadya is a graduate of the Ukrainian Folklore Program at the University of Alberta\, having completed her PhD in 2018. For some long-time users of the old site\, this has caused moments of frustration. In this talk Ken will take a look at the new site\, touch upon using the new census search system\, and explore other resources they have made available to us. \nEmbarking on a genealogical adventure over two decades ago\, Ken McKinlay’s quest began with a mission to confirm or debunk three family stories. Despite uncovering the truths behind those initial tales\, Ken’s passion for delving into his family’s past remains steadfast\, fueled by a constant stream of new questions. As a sought-after speaker by branches of Ontario Ancestors\, the British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa\, and other genealogy societies across Canada\, Ken McKinlay shares his expertise through engaging talks and workshops. His topics have included researching those who have fought for Canada in the world wars\, exploring the Canadian censuses\, delving into the mysteries of Ontario Land Records\, and an eight-part series covering “Back to Basics” research for the British Isles. His presentations also focus on genealogical methodologies and overcoming genealogy brick walls. The United States and Canada share a border that seems to stretch naturally across the continent. Politically speaking\, however\, securing the Canadian border by no means happened naturally. The government had to act fast\, and great sacrifices were made. At a crucial juncture\, when British Columbia could have been seized by its American neighbour\, the Canadian government needed significant manpower to solidify its confederacy – and thousands of Chinese came to Canada to help make this happen. \nThis series pays homage to early Chinese immigrants by offering a glimpse of their sacrifices and contributions\, both of which have predominantly been excluded from Canada’s educational and community spaces. \n
