SUMMARY:CHEATED: The Laurier Liberals and the Theft of First Nations Reserve Land
DESCRIPTION:Historian Bill Waiser will examine how First Nations reserve land surrenders were not used to meet homesteader demand during the early 20th century settlement boom\, but rather to line the pockets of politicians and others. \nThis event is free to the public! Donations are gratefully accepted – suggested donation of $10 per person to support Heritage Regina’s educational programming. \n  \nAbout the Speaker \nBill Waiser is one of Canada’s foremost historians. Waiser was a professor of History at the University of Saskatchewan for over 30 years. He was named Distinguished Professor Emeritus after his retirement from the university. Waiser has also worked as a Yukon Historian for Parks Canada. Now a full-time writer and public speaker\, Waiser has written 21 books\, with his most recent entitled “Cheated: The Laurier Liberals and the Theft of First Nations Reserve Land”\, the topic of this year’s lecture. Waiser has been a recipient of several awards and honours\, including the Order of Canada\, the Saskatchewan Order of Merit\, and the Governor General’s Literary Award for Non-Fiction. Waiser has also had regular columns in many Canadian newspapers. \n  \nPhoto credit: retrieved from the Globe and Mail

SUMMARY:“Exploring Library and Archives Canada Online” & SGS AGM
DESCRIPTION:Join the Saskatchewan Genealogy Society for a virtual information session about genealogical research\, followed by their Annual General Meeting. \nOver the past few years the website for Library and Archives Canada has undergone a number of changes. For some long-time users of the old site\, this has caused moments of frustration. In this talk Ken will take a look at the new site\, touch upon using the new census search system\, and explore other resources they have made available to us. \nEmbarking on a genealogical adventure over two decades ago\, Ken McKinlay’s quest began with a mission to confirm or debunk three family stories. Despite uncovering the truths behind those initial tales\, Ken’s passion for delving into his family’s past remains steadfast\, fueled by a constant stream of new questions. As a sought-after speaker by branches of Ontario Ancestors\, the British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa\, and other genealogy societies across Canada\, Ken McKinlay shares his expertise through engaging talks and workshops. His topics have included researching those who have fought for Canada in the world wars\, exploring the Canadian censuses\, delving into the mysteries of Ontario Land Records\, and an eight-part series covering “Back to Basics” research for the British Isles. His presentations also focus on genealogical methodologies and overcoming genealogy brick walls. Beyond public speaking\, Ken shares his insights on his blog\, Family Tree Knots (https://familytreeknots.blogspot.com/)\, providing a valuable resource for fellow enthusiasts. \nFollowing Ken’s presentation and questions and answers there will be a short break before the Annual General Meeting gets underway.  There are no major motions for changes to the Constitution or Bylaws on the agenda at this time.

SUMMARY:Unveiling of a Permanent Indigenous Veterans' Monument

The unveiling coincides with the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.\n\n\n\nFrom the Royal Regina Trust: “This monument stands as a reminder of their courage and sacrifice—and the injustices many faced upon returning home. SUMMARY:Feature Exhibit Unveiling: We Are Immigrants
DESCRIPTION:From our friends at Government House: \nWe are thrilled to announce that the unveiling of We Are Immigrants\, our 2025 Feature Exhibit is taking place Saturday\, May 24\, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Government House. \nWe Are Immigrants is a travelling exhibit featuring the moving and thought-provoking work of artist Raeann Kit-Yee Cheung. Through powerful imagery\, this exhibit reveals the often-hidden hardships and lasting legacy of early Chinese Canadian immigrants – and celebrates their vital contributions to the building of our nation. \nThe exhibit launch event will feature an exciting cultural showcase\, featuring a Lion Dance by Kung Fu Regina\, Chinese folk dancing by the Regina Chinese Cultural Association\, and a graceful Tai Chi demonstration by Chung Wah Tai Chi \nAfter the program\, explore the exhibit and join us for a warm and welcoming reception in the beautiful Government House ballroom. \nWe would be honored if you could join us for this special occasion. We look forward to seeing you there! \n— \nThis series of images celebrates the legacy of Chinese immigrants as important contributors to the unification of what we now know as Canada. The United States and Canada share a border that seems to stretch naturally across the continent. Politically speaking\, however\, securing the Canadian border by no means happened naturally. The government had to act fast\, and great sacrifices were made. At a crucial juncture\, when British Columbia could have been seized by its American neighbour\, the Canadian government needed significant manpower to solidify its confederacy – and thousands of Chinese came to Canada to help make this happen. \nThis series pays homage to early Chinese immigrants by offering a glimpse of their sacrifices and contributions\, both of which have predominantly been excluded from Canada’s educational and community spaces. \n
