SUMMARY:Exhibit: Spring on the Prairie: Kiyoshi Izumi and the work of Izumi Arnott and Sugiyama
DESCRIPTION:Check out the MacKenzie Art Gallery’s newest exhibit starting on September 12\, created by Bernard Flaman and Tak Pham. The exhibit will be at the gallery until January 19\, 2025. For more details\, visit the MacKenzie Art Gallery’s website. \n  \nKiyoshi Izumi is the earliest known Canadian architect of Japanese descent. His design firm Izumi Arnott and Sugiyama was responsible for many important civic buildings in Saskatchewan during the 15 years of its existence from 1954 to 1969. Born in Vancouver\, British Columbia to Japanese immigrant parents\, Izumi’s personal journey from Vancouver to Regina following the introduction of Canada’s War Measures Act in 1942 is remarkable. He avoided the internment camps of British Columbia and settled in Regina with the aid of its small Japanese Canadian community. He went on to become one of the brightest graduates from the School of Architecture at the University of Manitoba in 1948\, a testament to his perseverance. \nTaking advantage of postwar economic expansion\, Izumi bolstered the development of modernist and civic architecture in Saskatchewan. He excelled as an architect\, establishing a reputation based on talent and vision despite lingering racism following the war. In 1954\, Kiyoshi partnered with his former classmate Gordon Arnott and structural engineer James Sugiyama to open the design firm Izumi Arnott and Sugiyama. With Izumi’s design sensitivities\, Arnott’s business skills\, and Sugiyama’s in-house structural expertise\, it was a team that flourished! \nIn Regina\, the firm was responsible for a cultural hat trick: the expanded Norman Mackenzie Art Gallery\, the Regina Public Library Central Branch\, and the Saskatchewan Centre of the Arts (now Conexus Arts Centre.) At the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon\, the firm created the second master plan that guided the postwar expansion of the campus\, including Marquis Hall\, the W. P. Thompson Biology Building\, and the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. \nAt the height of his practice\, Izumi worked with British psychiatrist and psychedelic researcher Humphry Osmond and Canadian biochemist and psychiatrist Abram Hoffer to develop a new design for psychiatric hospitals in Saskatchewan\, the first of which was constructed in Yorkton. In order to create a plan that would be sympathetic to patients\, Izumi experimented with psychedelics to fully understand the effects of his design. His unconventional research method has attracted the attention of critics and scholars both then and now. \nSpring on the Prairie: Kiyoshi Izumi and the work of Izumi Arnott and Sugiyama celebrates the understated modernism of their buildings\, highlighting the blend of durable materials and human-centric designs. The exhibition also features a selection of artwork from the MacKenzie’s Permanent Collection by significant Saskatchewan modernist artists—a selection that offers historical context and enriches the dialogue around Izumi’s architectural legacy.

SUMMARY:Launch Event: Prairie Chapter of the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals
DESCRIPTION:From Brad Taylor\, JCK Engineering\, Treasurer of the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals: \nI am very pleased to announce that the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals has established a Prairie Chapter\, and that we will be holding our first events this fall. \nBeing that we are a Chapter that is spread out over three Provinces and one Territory we understand that connecting as one large group will be a bit of a challenge. We are working on planning one central event; however\, we thought it would be great to have some micro events that will help connect people. The attached poster details events that are happening in Winnipeg\, Regina\, and Calgary. We hope to do this again in the next few months for Saskatoon and Edmonton as well. \nOn September 14th there is a new exhibit opening at the Mackenzie Art Gallery – Spring on the Prairie: Kiyoshi Izumi and the work of Izumi Arnott and Sugiyama. We thought this would be a great opportunity to learn a bit about one aspect of built heritage in Saskatchewan. Plan to meet at 7:00 in the lobby of the art gallery. Regular admission is $12. \nSpring on the Prairie: Kiyoshi Izumi and the work of Izumi Arnott and Sugiyama | MacKenzie Art Gallery \nAfter that\, we will head over to the patio at Bar Willow. The reservation is for 8:30. Come mingle\, order some drinks or some food\, and enjoy a great night on Regina’s best patio. At some point I will talk a little about the Prairie Chapter\, and the National Association. \nPlease feel free to pass this onto people you know who may be interested\, and feel free to bring your partner\, a friend\, or an unsuspecting young person who needs to hear about heritage.

Mark will share the story of his father Leonard\, who enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War\, ultimately serving in the 158 Squadron of the Royal Air Force. He was gunned down over Holland\, and spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner before returning to Saskatchewan. \n  \n \nJames (Jim) Pratt is originally from the Muscowpetung Saulteaux Nation. He served 2 years with the RCMP in the 1970s as a band constable\, before joining the Regina Police Service (RPS). He retired from the RPS in 2008 as a corporal of 27 years. He also served for 19 years as a reserve field military officer in the Canadian Armed Forces. Now an instructor in the Justice Studies program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic\, James works alongside Treaty 4 elders as a traditional helper. He will be speaking about his service as well as that of his father’s\, William Pratt\, who served in the Second World War. James continues to share his traditional knowledge both in and out of the policing world\, serves on several community boards\, and advises the policing community when asked to do so. \nJames is married with 2 sons and a daughter\, 9 grandchildren\, and 2 great-grandchildren with whom he spends lots of time. He enjoys hunting\, fishing\, and sharing his traditional knowledge with young people. \n  \nAll are welcome! This event is free to the public\, though a $10 donation is suggested to support Heritage Regina’s educational programming. We will also be collecting donations for the Royal Canadian Legion’s Poppy Fund. \nThank you to the Royal Canadian Legion – Saskatchewan Command for sponsoring this event. \n  \nMark Coté will have copies of That Lucky Old Son available for purchase after the lecture (cash only).
