SUMMARY:Heritage Day
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with local community groups and provincial organizations\, you are invited to celebrate the heritage of our country\, province and city. The event will feature Canadian short films\, information\, heritage demonstrations and activities for the whole family. \nNATIONAL FILM BOARD SHORT FILMS\nShort films from the National Film Board will be shown in Saskatchewan Theatre throughout the day on a repeating loop. \nHow the Fiddle Flows\nGregory Coyes\, 2002 | 48 min\nIt’s high summer in southern Saskatchewan and a rollicking tune fills the night. Four master Metis fiddlers play to the tapping toes of a lively crowd. How the Fiddle Flows follows Canada’s great rivers west along the fur-trading route of the early Europeans. The newcomers introduced the fiddle to the Aboriginal people they intermarried with along the way. A generation later\, their mixed-blood offspring would blend European folk tunes with First Nations rhythms to create a rich and distinct musical tradition. From the Gaspé Peninsula\, north to Hudson Bay and to the Prairies\, How the Fiddle Flows reveals how a distinctive Metis identity and culture were shaped over time. Featuring soaring performances by some of Canada’s best-known fiddlers and step dancers and narrated by award-winning actress Tantoo Cardinal. \nGone Curling\nJohn Howe\, 1963 | 10 min\nThis short comedy follows a visitor to the prairies as he slowly discovers the cult of curling. At first\, our protagonist doesn’t seem to understand why everyone is so crazy about curling\, but once he studies up\, buys the right gear\, and gets a few lessons\, he can’t be stopped. This hilarious short film records the history of a rookie’s first game. Even non-curlers will feel the pull of the stones and the flick of the brooms in this choice rink-side view. \nWindbreaks on the Prairie\nEvelyn Cherry\, 1943 | 18 min\nThis short film serves as a cautionary tale to farmers who recklessly cut down trees on their land. When prairie farmers engaged in this practice to facilitate plowing\, they discovered that the trees had served as windbreaks protecting top soil from erosion. The Dominion Department of Agriculture’s experimental station at Indian Head\, Saskatchewan\, cultivated acres of young trees for distribution to farmers. \nBig Drive\nAnita Lebeau\, 2011 | 9 min\nThis short animation film tells the story of a family road trip across the Canadian prairies set in the 1970s. In an era before in-car movies and video games\, 4 sisters squeeze into the back of the family car for a long journey. While the parents keep a steady watch on the road ahead\, restlessness gradually gives way to mayhem in the car’s close quarters. Just before the ride becomes unbearable\, the sisters are inspired to combine their creative energy and the big drive becomes an even bigger adventure. \nFirst Stories: Two-Spirited\nSharon A. Desjarlais\, 2007 | 6 min\nThis short documentary presents the empowering story of Rodney “Geeyo” Poucette’s struggle against prejudice in the Indigenous community as a two-spirited person (gay\, lesbian\, bisexual\, and transgender). First Stories is an emerging filmmaker program for Indigenous youth which produced 3 separate collections of short films from Manitoba\, Saskatchewan\, and Alberta. Produced in association with CBC\, APTN\, SCN\, SaskFilm and MANITOBA FILM & SOUND. \nThe Magic Quilt\nBettina Maylone\, 1985 | 12 min\nIn this short film\, which mixes live action with cutout and embroidery animation\, a group of children finds a magic quilt that is their passport to a voyage of discovery. They step inside the quilt and as they travel through its velvet farmlands and satin cities\, they experience the multiculturalism of Canada. The quilt is torn and the magic broken when a quarrel breaks out. Once the quilt is repaired and harmony restored\, the children have learned that patience and goodwill are needed to mend and maintain quilts\, friendships\, and nations. \nRegular Museum admission applies. FREE for WDM members.

SUMMARY:Threads That Bind: The Connections Between Society\, Art & Architecture
DESCRIPTION:Architectural history is not simply the study of buildings\, it is also the study of context and society. Culture and art influence architecture and are influenced by it. Architecture embodies the story of a culture and reflects a constantly changing world-view. This presentation will explore how architecture does not occur in a vacuum but reflects the culture that creates it and how\,in turn\, it influences culture. We will examine the relationship between art\, architecture\, and historical context through a number of examples from western civilization\, including some examples from Regina. \nPresented by James J. Youck\, B.A.\, B. Arch.\, MSAA\, RAIC\, AIA Principal\, Architect\, P3Architecture Partnership (P3A). \nJames holds degrees in Art History and Architecture from the University of Saskatchewan and Carleton University respectively\, both achieved with Distinction. He returned to his hometown of Regina in 1994 after a short sojourn in Japan and began his career. He joined Pettick Phillips Partners Architects\, now P3Architecture Partnership (P3A)\, in 1998\, becoming a partner in 2002. P3A has grown into the largest locally owned design company in Regina with an extensive portfolio of high profile work.

SUMMARY:Little Miss Higgins
DESCRIPTION:The Artesian is proud to once again present a crowd favourite\, Winnipeg’s own Little Miss Higgins! \nDoors at 7\, music at 8\nTickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.\n*The fees incurred on advance tickets go directly to the Artesian and help us put on more great events just like this one.*\nThe Artesian is wheelchair accessible\, all-ages\, and a proud supporter of positive spaces initiatives with a zero-tolerance policy towards hate\, harassment\, and/or discrimination. We reserve the right to remove any patron creating an unsafe environment. The accessible entrance is available via a lift\, Please ask staff for help if necessary. \nAbout Little Miss Higgins: \nFrom the Great Northern Plains of Western Canada\, Little Miss Higgins struts and serenades her way\, guitar in hand\, lips blazoned red\, onto any stage. As if she just drove in off the back-road of another time with gravel dust and a sunset trailing behind her\, this pocket-sized powerhouse plays music brewed up in old-time country blues sprinkled with a little jazz and maybe a hint of folk. Whether it’s songs about passion or songs about panties\, she writes about real things in a rooted and poetic way. This is all too true on her most recent award winning album\, Across The Plains (2010). \nLittle Miss Higgins (aka Jolene Higgins) was born in Brooks\, Alberta\, and raised in Independence\, Kansas. \nMusic entered her life early. \n“When I was about four my dad bought this old piano at a local bar\,” she recalls. “It was a mini grand piano. He brought it home and told me it was mine. I carved my name in the side and started taking piano lessons.” \nGrowing up playing piano\, Higgins now uses guitar and voice as her main instruments as well as her theatre background to bring a “refreshing sound and story to the stage.” She spent a number of years after studying theatre at a college in Alberta\, roaming Western Canada\, acting in plays\, frequenting blues clubs and playing her guitar. Higgins finally settled down in Saskatchewan and that’s when music took the driver’s seat. \nHer stage name\, Little Miss Higgins suits the undeniably inflammatory mix of her blues and country music repertoire but the moniker was largely accidental. “When I moved to Saskatchewan in 2002 I started hanging out with this Greek guy\,” she recalls “He started calling me Little Miss Higgins so I used it on poster for a gig I was doing and it just stuck.” \nOver the past five years\, Little Miss Higgins has built a strong national reputation throughout Canada\, appearing in clubs and on festival stages in Edmonton\, Winnipeg\, Montreal\, Owen Sound\, and Canso\, Nova Scotia performing most often as a duo with partner and guitar player\, Foy Taylor. \nAs a songwriter\, she has been influenced by a range of artists from Memphis Minnie\, Billie Holiday\, Big Bill Broonzy to Joni Mitchell\, Dolly Parton and Bob Dylan. \nHer first two studio albums “Cobbler Shop Sessions” (2006) and “Junction City” (2007) superbly showcase Little Miss Higgins as a highly-developed songwriter as well as a remarkable country blues performer in a style gracefully highlighted by her partner\, guitarist Foy Taylor and occasionally a handful of other roots musicians. \nThe release of “Junction City” resulted in a handful of honours for Little Miss Higgins including JUNO and Maple Blues Awards nominations and won as Outstanding Blues Recording at Western Canadian Music Awards and Favourite Blues Artist/Group or Duo of the Year category of the 8th Annual Indies Awards. \nTo her fan’s delight\, there was the 2009 release “Little Miss Higgins Live: Two Nights In March”. The album was recorded at Amigo’s Cantina in Saskatoon\, and Engineered Air Theatre in Calgary. The album features such favourite performance fare as “The Dirty Ol Tractor Song\,” “Velvet Barley Bed\,” “In The Middle Of Nowhere” and “I’m Gonna Bake My Biscuits.” As well as a couple of previously unreleased songs including “Snowin’ Today: A Lament For Louis Riel.” \nFor her newest release\, Bison Ranch Recording Sessions\, Little Miss Higgins teamed up with a very talented quintet of musicians from Manitoba. She calls them the Winnipeg Five—Jimmie James McKee on trumpet\, Eric Lemoine on banjo and pedal steel\, Blake Thomson on guitar\, Patrick Alexandre Leclerc on upright bass\, Evan Friesen on drums and all five of them sing harmonies. As they play music in a similar vein as Higgins\, it was a fitting alliance both onstage and in the studio…well\, not quite a typical recording studio. With new songs waiting on the sidelines\, the six of them decided to record in a barn\, a barn on a bison ranch in rural Manitoba. \nThe barn was built in 1951. It serviced farm life for many years\, until it was moved in 2004 to the Renaissance Bison Ranch\, during which it was restored and the loft (no longer a hay loft\, but where the music would be made) was turned into what might be considered a recreational space with a Ping-Pong table\, shuffleboard and a wood stove. \nBefore they could begin\, they had to build sound baffles\, load gear up the wooden steps\, and stack a cord of wood to keep the wood stove going (though they imagined it would be spring and the temperature would begin to rise when they went to the barn to record\, it was the coldest April on record in the Canadian prairies. There was still snow on the ground\, still snow on the tin roof that slide off a few times causing the band to have to stop and restart.)\nThe album was engineered by Steve Loree and co-produced by Higgins and Winnipeg Five bass player\, Patrick Alexandre Leclerc. Everything was captured live off the floor—fire crackles and crow cawing included. The experience of recording live brought out the authenticity of the music\, the talent of the musicians and the connection of the group. This was an important part of the process for Higgins and Leclerc. What you hear is how it happened. \nThe album was mixed by Blake Thomson and mastered by Jamie Sitar\, both in Winnipeg\, Manitoba. Also\, just as she has done on all her past four albums\, Higgins did the artwork and design for the cover of Bison Ranch Recording Sessions. No bison were harmed during the recording\, though just below the floor where Higgins stood during recording was a pile of bison skulls listening to every moment of music that was made in the barn.

SUMMARY:Port Cities
DESCRIPTION:The Artesian is proud to welcome Port Cities back to our stage all the way from Halifax for an evening of fantastic music. \nDoors at 7\, music at 8\nTickets are $20 in advance and at the door \nThe Artesian is wheelchair accessible\, all-ages\, and a proud supporter of safe spaces initiatives with a zero-tolerance policy towards hate\, harassment\, and/or discrimination. We reserve the right to remove any patron creating an unsafe environment. The accessible entrance is available via a lift\, Please ask staff for help if necessary. \nAbout Port Cities \nIn the brief period of time since Port Cities unleashed their incendiary debut—a wildly self-assured collection of sparkling\, rootsy pop that showcases the Nova Scotia trio’s devotion to songwriting—the band’s been hard at work bringing it to the masses. They’ve continued to explore and evolve their ambitious pop sound\, melding diverse musical backgrounds to create an alchemy that’s part art\, part songwriting science\, and all magic: the nimble dynamism of Breagh MacKinnon’s smoky\, jazz-indebted delivery\, Dylan Guthro’s simmering and soulful R&B swagger\, and Carleton Stone’s razor-sharp\, romantic rock ‘n’ roll. In 2018\, that memory-making mix of unforgettable melodies\, high-flying harmonies\, and electrifying heart on Port Cities is set to reach audiences worldwide. \nIt’s a chemistry that’s been perfected during the 100+ dates they’ve toured in the past year\, in hotel rooms and songwriter circles\, in vans rolling through foreign countries to rowdy pubs\, and on the fog-bound shores of Canada’s misty east coast. It’s helped lead the band to numerous accolades\, including a whopping five Nova Scotia Music Awards\, a SOCAN #1 Award (for “Back to the Bottom”)\, and stints at #1 on CBC and Spotify charts. Port Cities has amassed over 1.5 million streams internationally\, showcased at The Great Escape\, Focus Wales\, and the Reeperbahn Festival\, and will be releasing their debut in the U.K. and Germany this year. \nBeyond Port Cities’ deep devotion to their craft\, their success is largely built on a simple but timeless approach: a good song is a good song is a good song. Whether it’s awash with synthesizer (“Sound of Your Voice”)\, pumped up with an overdriven crunch (“Where Have You Been”)\, or stripped down to the bare essentials with just an acoustic guitar and three voices. No matter what music the melody might call for\, the best song always wins.

SUMMARY:Elizabeth Shepherd & Andrea Ramolo Double Bill
DESCRIPTION:The Artesian is proud to present a fantastic double-bill featuring Canadian songwriters Elizabeth Shepherd and Andrea Ramolo on Sunday\, November 18th 2018. The internationally renowned Shepherd will be here with her full band\, singing beloved works by Joni Mitchell\, Leonard Cohen\, Bruce Cockburn\, Gordon Lightfoot\, and other Canadian greats. Ramolo will be on tour in support of her latest Album\, a tribute album of Leonard Cohen’s music called ‘Homage’. \nIt’s a Sunday show\, so we’ll Open the Doors & Lounge at 7:00PM and the Concert will get underway at 7:30PM. Tickets are $20 in Advance or at the Door. The Artesian is an all-ages and wheelchair accessible facility. \nABOUT ELIZABETH SHEPHERD \nVelvety-voiced pianist Elizabeth Shepherd arrived on the international scene in 2006 when her debut album Start To Move was voted one of the top jazz albums of the year by the listeners of the influential Gilles Peterson Show on BBC Radio Worldwide. Since then\, the Montreal-based soul-jazz innovator has established herself as one of the most alluring and imaginative artists on the scene today. Versed in equal parts Stevie Wonder\, Salvation Army brass bands and classical sonatas\, it is perhaps no surprise that this globetrotting talent has developed such a distinct and unique voice. \nElizabeth has been hailed as “a jazz virtuoso blessed with a pop sensibility”\, praised by critics worldwide for her arrestingly original writing and soulful delivery. Along with artists like Esperanza Spalding\, Robert Glasper\, and Jose James she is seen as part of a wave of jazz musicians bringing the art form to a new generation of music fans. \nThe four-time JUNO nominee (Canada’s Grammy equivalent) has released four widely acclaimed records and toured extensively in North America\, Europe\, Japan and Mexico. She has sold out legendary clubs from Tokyo to Detroit\, played major festivals like Montreal and North Sea Jazz Festivals\, shared the stage with Victor Wooten\, Branford Marsalis and Christian McBride\, and opened for Jamie Cullum at The Hollywood Bowl. Elizabeth is also the only jazz vocalist to ever have been long listed for the Polaris Prize – Canada’s most prestigious music prize – an honour she has received twice. \nABOUT ANDREA RAMOLO  \nAndrea Ramolo is a Canadian singer/songwriter and recording artist. Her latest album is an homage to iconic Canadian songwriter\, Mr. Leonard Cohen\, and includes her renditions of 10 of his songs from the classics to some more contemporary choices. The record is called ‘Homage’ and is produced by Michael Timmins of the Cowboy Junkies\, who I’ve already had the pleasure of working with on my last release NUDA. \nFrom Andrea: I have been gently colliding with the spirit of Cohen for a while. I fell in love with his prose and poetry during my early years in university. I had never connected with anything so raw and prophetic before and I always loved the way he strungtogethersimple words that would explode into themost lushand rich imagery and profound meaning when placed alongside one another. Years later\, I was given the opportunity to join Leonard’s son Adam Cohen onstage with my partner in Scarlett Jane to sing backup vocals for his show at Place des Arts in Montreal along with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. We moved into Leonard’s Montreal home for the week to rehearse the show and my intrigue and passion for his work and life continued to grow. A few weeks after he sadly passed away\, I was playing a show in Montreal at the Corona Theatre to celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Last Waltz\, andmyselfand Gavin Gardner from the Wooden Sky whipped together a duet version of ‘Hey That’s No Way To Say Goodbye’ to end the night. From that moment forward\, I took that beautiful song with me wherever I went\, and having recently suffered my own hard goodbye\, the song means more to me now than ever. The hardest goodbyes are often saved for those who have had a profound effect on us. This album is a love project tohonourLeonard\, his poetryandsong\, and the ways his music has weaved through and impacted my own life\, my own stories\, and my own goodbyes. \n‘Homage’ is available for Pre-Order through Pledge Music: https://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/andrearamolohomage
