SUMMARY:Catalogue Houses - 2018 Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:A century ago\, with our flourishing farms and urban centers\, there was a high demand for new homes. Designers and skilled trades people were in short supply. Eaton’s\, Sears and Aladdin Homes shipped thousands of homes to the Prairies by rail and they were assembled by local labour. Similar to the way we order on-line today\, these kit homes could be ordered to exact specifications. Millwork\, plumbing fixtures and even furniture could be included with your shipment. Heritage Regina\, supported by the Civic Museum of Regina and narrated by John Robinson\, will present the story of these early homes\, with original advertising posters\, catalogues and artifacts. \nJohn Robinson has been in the architectural design and drafting profession since 1977\, after obtaining a diploma in Architectural Engineering Technology. With 40 years of experience in single family\, multi-family and commercial drawing production\, he is still passionate about good design. In 1996\, John incorporated Robinson Residential Design\, a firm providing customized residential design and drafting services to home owners\, builders and developers. John’s design projects have been featured on HGTV as well as several local TV documentaries. John’s interest in heritage architecture began early\, growing up in a home that was ordered from an Aladdin catalogue.. Over the years he has amassed a collection of original home catalogues dating back to 1889 which are a continuing source of inspiration for restorations and new heritage sensitive infill housing designs. \nRefreshments provided. A $10 suggested donation to Heritage Regina goes towards the promotion and preservation of heritage in your community. \nPresented by John Robinson. \nSee our Facebook event for updates.

SUMMARY:Why Prohibition Failed in Saskatchewan - 2018 Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:In Saskatchewan\, the “war to the death between the church and the saloon”\, as a clergyman called it\, began in December 1907 with the formation of the Social and Moral Reform Council of Saskatchewan. In 1915 the Saskatchewan people voted to abolish the government liquor stores and adopt Provincial prohibition. Provincial laws against the consumption of booze did not make Saskatchewan “dry” since the Saskatchewan government did not control the nations breweries and distilleries. Saskatchewan residents found ways to import booze from neighbouring provinces. Prohibition also spawned criminal activities\, such as “rum-runners” and “export houses” to meet the needs of bootleggers and their thirsty customers. \nOn February 27\, Dr. Bill Brennan\, an accomplished local historian\, will explain how prohibition failed in Saskatchewan. Come to this lecture to experience what it would have been like to live in Saskatchewan during the prohibition era. Those in attendance will be encouraged to celebrate the 1924 end to prohibition with a free drink at the Hotel Saskatchewan following the lecture. \nPresented by Dr. Bill Brennan. \nRefreshments provided. A $10 suggested donation to Heritage Regina goes towards the promotion and preservation of heritage in your community. \nSee our Facebook event for updates.

SUMMARY:College Avenue Campus Restoration – 2018 Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Join Heritage Consultant Donald Luxton for an illustrated talk on the historic College Avenue Campus\, including its history\, decline and current renewal. The history of the site dates back to the establishment of Regina College in 1911\, the subsequent construction of Darke Hall and the establishment of the University of Regina. Donald’s expertise\, interest and accomplishments as an author\, educator and practitioner have been recognized and acknowledged through numerous awards\, including the Heritage Canada Achievement Award in 2003 and a number of literary prizes including a BC Book Prize in 2004. \nHe is currently acting as the Heritage Consultant for the College Avenue Renewal. \nRefreshments provided.

SUMMARY:Regina Spanish Influenza Memorial Unveiling
DESCRIPTION:Throughout 2017 I have worked with various groups and organizations throughout the city to raise money for a memorial for Regina’s 330 Spanish Influenza victims. \nOn December 14th at 3pm we will be unveiling a memorial in honour of those 330 victims at the Regina Cemetery\, near the graves of several unmarked victims. \nWhen the Spanish Flu arrived in 1918\, the city put in a ban on public gatherings to prevent the spread of the flu. Many of the people were never able to say goodbye to their loved ones. Today\, there is no such ban in place\, so please come out and remember those lives lost. \nSpecial thanks to:\nSpeers Funeral and Cremation Services\nHeritage Regina\nFrontier Monuments\nRegina Catholic School Division\nSaskatchewan Military Museum\nCity of Regina | Municipal Government\nJay Carnall\nRock of Ages Canada\nAll individuals who donated

SUMMARY:Telling Regina’s story through its historic places
DESCRIPTION:The historic places we value helped shape our community and tell Regina’s story. The Heritage Conservation Program is the tool used to document our story and manage historic places. It aligns with the policies and vision of Design Regina: The Official Community Plan and the Regina Cultural Plan to identify and conserve historic places. \n  \nThe City of Regina is reviewing the cultural\, economic and historical drivers that shaped our community. These important themes in our history will assist in identifying places that matter. \n  \nWe want to hear from you. You are invited to learn about a proposed theme-based approach for future evaluation of potential historic places and the themes identified to assess the significance of historic places at a come-and-go open house: \nRepresentatives from the City of Regina will be on hand to answer questions and you will have the opportunity to comment on the themes as well as share your thoughts on the places that matter to you.

Between 1905 and 1930 the firm designed most of Regina’s significant pre-WWII buildings including:\n•         Most of the fine old homes in Lakeview and along College Avenue;\n•         Most of the city’s early apartment blocks;\n•         Most of Regina’s warehouses and factories;\n•         Schools\, hospitals\, churches\, and other public buildings.\nThe firm’s project list is long and a great many instantly-recognizable buildings still stand are still contributing to the economy of the city.  The photographs used in the presentation were contained in two albums put together in 1930 and used by the firm as a source of documentation and\, probably\, sales promotion.
