DESCRIPTION:Join James Youck during Heritage Week as he presents a brief history of the College Avenue Campus\, and a more detailed description of how this rich sociological and architectural history embodied by Collegiate Gothic style affect the design process for the College Avenue Campus Renewal. The challenge of renovation\, restoration\, and addition to the heritage campus in a modern context will be presented. An overview of the analysis of the site and existing architecture will be reviewed in the context of the strategies\, interpretation\, and solutions arrived at by the design team.\n\nJames Youck is an Architect and Principal at the P3Architecture Partnership (P3A). James is a graduate of the Carleton School of Architecture and holds a second degree in the History of Art and Architecture from the University of Saskatchewan. He is the Design Director for the College Avenue Campus project and is responsible for coordination of the design for the CAC Renewal.\nP3A are leading a team that includes experts in heritage restoration including Donald Luxton and Associates.\n\nRefreshments provided. DESCRIPTION:A new public lecture series at the University of Regina will mark the 150th Anniversary of Confederation and the birth of Canada in 1867. The Canada 150 Lecture Series: The Making of Canada features six lectures over four days\, starting on January 19 with Canadian historian Christopher Moore’s lecture: “A Living Tree? Canada’s Constitution 150 Years Ago – and Today.” Moore has been called Canada’s most versatile writer of history. The Toronto-based writer has been presenting Canadian history to non-specialist audiences through many media for 20 years. \nMore than recounting events leading to Confederation in 1867\, the series of six lectures will reflect on the spirit and principles of the original dreams of the founders of Canada. Speakers include Prof. James Daschuk and Prof Sylvain Rehault from the University of Regina\, Darren Prefontaine from the Gabriel Dumont Institute\, and master of ceremonies Frank Korvemaker\, and characters from the ‘Trial of Louis Riel’ play. Archives Week showcases the role archives and archivists play in preserving and making available Saskatchewan’s documentary heritage. SUMMARY:The Canadian Pacific Railway and the Founding of Regina
DESCRIPTION:The founding of Regina in 1882 followed a pattern that dates back to the earliest days of European settlement in North America: the creation of towns (and future cities in some cases) by an individual or some organized body\, rather than by the settlers when they arrived. In Regina’s case it was the Canadian Pacific Railway that founded our city. \nSo why was Regina located on a flat and cheerless plain\, with a small meandering creek its only visible water supply?   \nWhen the CPR laid out the townsite why did it make the streets so narrow and the lots so small? \nAnd with so little natural beauty\, why was Regina chosen to become the capital of the North-West Territories?  \n  \nOn January 24\, Dr. Bill Brennan will explain how Regina came to be. \n  \nBill has written the most detailed history of our city: Regina: An Illustrated History. He has also published articles about Regina in scholarly journals such as Prairie Forum\, Saskatchewan History and the Urban History Review. \n  \nRefreshments will be provided.
