SUMMARY:Threads That Bind: The Connections Between Society\, Art & Architecture
DESCRIPTION:Architectural history is not simply the study of buildings\, it is also the study of context and society. Culture and art influence architecture and are influenced by it. Architecture embodies the story of a culture and reflects a constantly changing world-view. This presentation will explore how architecture does not occur in a vacuum but reflects the culture that creates it and how\,in turn\, it influences culture. We will examine the relationship between art\, architecture\, and historical context through a number of examples from western civilization\, including some examples from Regina. \nPresented by James J. Youck\, B.A.\, B. Arch.\, MSAA\, RAIC\, AIA Principal\, Architect\, P3Architecture Partnership (P3A). \nJames holds degrees in Art History and Architecture from the University of Saskatchewan and Carleton University respectively\, both achieved with Distinction. He returned to his hometown of Regina in 1994 after a short sojourn in Japan and began his career. He joined Pettick Phillips Partners Architects\, now P3Architecture Partnership (P3A)\, in 1998\, becoming a partner in 2002. P3A has grown into the largest locally owned design company in Regina with an extensive portfolio of high profile work.

SUMMARY:Heritage Day
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with local community groups and provincial organizations\, you are invited to celebrate the heritage of our country\, province and city. The event will feature Canadian short films\, information\, heritage demonstrations and activities for the whole family. \nNATIONAL FILM BOARD SHORT FILMS\nShort films from the National Film Board will be shown in Saskatchewan Theatre throughout the day on a repeating loop. \nHow the Fiddle Flows\nGregory Coyes\, 2002 | 48 min\nIt’s high summer in southern Saskatchewan and a rollicking tune fills the night. Four master Metis fiddlers play to the tapping toes of a lively crowd. How the Fiddle Flows follows Canada’s great rivers west along the fur-trading route of the early Europeans. The newcomers introduced the fiddle to the Aboriginal people they intermarried with along the way. A generation later\, their mixed-blood offspring would blend European folk tunes with First Nations rhythms to create a rich and distinct musical tradition. From the Gaspé Peninsula\, north to Hudson Bay and to the Prairies\, How the Fiddle Flows reveals how a distinctive Metis identity and culture were shaped over time. Featuring soaring performances by some of Canada’s best-known fiddlers and step dancers and narrated by award-winning actress Tantoo Cardinal. \nGone Curling\nJohn Howe\, 1963 | 10 min\nThis short comedy follows a visitor to the prairies as he slowly discovers the cult of curling. At first\, our protagonist doesn’t seem to understand why everyone is so crazy about curling\, but once he studies up\, buys the right gear\, and gets a few lessons\, he can’t be stopped. This hilarious short film records the history of a rookie’s first game. Even non-curlers will feel the pull of the stones and the flick of the brooms in this choice rink-side view. \nWindbreaks on the Prairie\nEvelyn Cherry\, 1943 | 18 min\nThis short film serves as a cautionary tale to farmers who recklessly cut down trees on their land. When prairie farmers engaged in this practice to facilitate plowing\, they discovered that the trees had served as windbreaks protecting top soil from erosion. The Dominion Department of Agriculture’s experimental station at Indian Head\, Saskatchewan\, cultivated acres of young trees for distribution to farmers. \nBig Drive\nAnita Lebeau\, 2011 | 9 min\nThis short animation film tells the story of a family road trip across the Canadian prairies set in the 1970s. In an era before in-car movies and video games\, 4 sisters squeeze into the back of the family car for a long journey. While the parents keep a steady watch on the road ahead\, restlessness gradually gives way to mayhem in the car’s close quarters. Just before the ride becomes unbearable\, the sisters are inspired to combine their creative energy and the big drive becomes an even bigger adventure. \nFirst Stories: Two-Spirited\nSharon A. Desjarlais\, 2007 | 6 min\nThis short documentary presents the empowering story of Rodney “Geeyo” Poucette’s struggle against prejudice in the Indigenous community as a two-spirited person (gay\, lesbian\, bisexual\, and transgender). First Stories is an emerging filmmaker program for Indigenous youth which produced 3 separate collections of short films from Manitoba\, Saskatchewan\, and Alberta. Produced in association with CBC\, APTN\, SCN\, SaskFilm and MANITOBA FILM & SOUND. \nThe Magic Quilt\nBettina Maylone\, 1985 | 12 min\nIn this short film\, which mixes live action with cutout and embroidery animation\, a group of children finds a magic quilt that is their passport to a voyage of discovery. They step inside the quilt and as they travel through its velvet farmlands and satin cities\, they experience the multiculturalism of Canada. The quilt is torn and the magic broken when a quarrel breaks out. Once the quilt is repaired and harmony restored\, the children have learned that patience and goodwill are needed to mend and maintain quilts\, friendships\, and nations. \nRegular Museum admission applies. FREE for WDM members.

SUMMARY:Melfort to host Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls conference
DESCRIPTION:Melfort is set to be host to an emotional\, important day on March 8. \nThe Marguerite Riel Centre will play host to the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls conference at the Kerry Vickar Centre. \nSeveral speakers will address the conference\, including Isabel Daniels from Sagkeeng First Nation in Manitoba. \nDaniels is a survivor of exploitation and trafficking\, and has worked as an advocate for exploited persons for eight years. \n Another speaker is Tyrelle Smith\, who has worked with women in the sex trade industry and human trafficking in Canada\, the U.S.\, Argentina\, Cambodia\, and India.\nElder Evelyn Burns will also be speaking at the conference. \nBurns has worked at the Marguerite Riel Centre since 2007\, but has a very personal story to tell. \n“I walked it. I went through that. I lost my mother\, my sister\, and my brother through that kind of stuff\, through Missing and Murdered Women and Girls\,” said Burns. \nBurns added that her healing journey began back in 1978. \n“I was an alcoholic and then I started in 1978 and then I found out there was something else\, and that was Residential School Syndrome\,” said Burns. “Then I found out there was another thing – this thing (MMIWG) – because I thought I had put it away\, you know it was healing\, and I thought that was it. I didn’t look back\, I kept on going\, working and whatnot.” \nVal Smokeyday of the Kinistin First Nation will also be on hand to share her MMIWG story. \nTo register for the conference\, you can call the Riel Centre at 306-752-4950. \nLunch is provided\, and registration is free.
