DESCRIPTION:Regina Regional Heritage Fair – Fri. May 5\n– Location: Campus Regina Public (1069 14th Ave E) \nThe Regional Heritage Fair includes the opportunity to: \n\ndevelop communication skills by presenting Heritage Fair projects to other students\, parents\, members of the public and judges\nparticipate in heritage-related workshop activities\ncompete for a variety of awards\nmeet other students from their region who are interested in heritage\nrepresent their school in a province-wide initiative\n\nSchools and parents are responsible for ensuring students have chaperones as well as transportation to the venue. Chaperones must bring signed consent forms for each student. \nStudent projects will be judged up to three times during the Regional Heritage Fair. Students will be judged in the language selected in the registration system. Judges will utilize a standard judging rubric. \nStudents may wish to begin their judging by presenting a 2-3 minute oral presentation. The purpose of the oral presentation is to introduce the project and share the important research. Judges will then interview the students about their project so be prepared to answer questions about why the topic was chosen\, how the research was done\, what the results were and what was learned about the topic. The purpose of the interview is to evaluate the depth of understanding of the student’s topic. The judges will also review your written report. SUMMARY:Heritage 101: An Introduction
DESCRIPTION:For more than 30 years\, the City of Regina has been a leader in recognizing the heritage value of historic places. The City of Regina’s Heritage Conservation Program ensures that historic places are protected\, conserved and continue to contribute to the quality of life in our neighbourhoods. Historic places reinforce the sense of place that makes Regina unique from other communities.\nCome hear about the tools used to identify\, conserve and protect historic places. This talk will explore the history of heritage conservation in Regina\, the regulatory environment at City Hall\, and the current review of the Heritage Conservation Program.\nLiberty Brears is a Senior City Planner at City Hall. She is a graduate of the University of Victoria\, holding both a Bachelor of Arts degree and a diploma in Cultural Resource Management. Liberty began her career in heritage while working on contract with the Government of British Columbia’s Heritage Branch in 1997. Since then\, she has been increasingly involved in the heritage community. She has participated as a Director on the Board of Heritage Saskatchewan and as an ICOMOS Canada Committee member. She worked as a heritage planner at the City of Vancouver before moving to Regina\, where she began leading the Heritage Conservation Program at the City of Regina in 2010.Refreshments provided. \n\nA $10 suggested donation to Heritage Regina goes towards the promotion and preservation of heritage in your community.

SUMMARY:Standards and Guidelines/Design Guidelines Workshop
DESCRIPTION:  \nApril 19:   Standards and Guidelines and Neighborhood Design Guidelines   \n9:00 am – 4:00 pm \nIt is often necessary to make changes to heritage buildings so that they can continue to have a viable use.  But\, what kinds of changes should be allowed?  The April 19th workshop will introduce participants to two tools that take the guesswork out of these decisions.  The Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada is a nationally recognized manual that uses a “recommended – not recommended” approach to guide decisions about alterations to heritage buildings and other historic places.  The workshop will also explain how to use the ministry’s new Design Toolkit to create community‑generated design guidelines\, another tool for making decisions about changes to historic and non‑historic buildings\, infill development and public realm improvements in historic neighbourhoods. \n  \n  \nThese workshops will be valuable learning opportunities for communities implementing a Main Street program\, and for any other organization that owns\, uses\, manages or regulates historic places.  Both workshops have also been certified for professional learning credits by the Saskatchewan Professional Planners Institute.  The workshops are designed so that they can be taken on a standalone basis\, but attendance at both is recommended for maximum benefit. \n  \nPre-registration is required for both workshops although there is no registration fee.  Please note that no lunch will be provided. \n  \nBoth workshops will be held at: \nSt Mary’s Anglican Church \n3337 15th Ave\, Regina \n  \nSeating is limited and will be booked on a first-come/first-serve basis. \n  \nTo register please follow the appropriate link:  \nStandards and Guidelines/Design Guidelines Workshop \nWednesday\, April 19\, 2016 \n9:00 am to 4:00 pm \nhttp://gos.fluidsurveys.com/s/2017-heritage-standards/

DESCRIPTION:Regina’s first tiny house was actually built 135 years ago\, it provided the basic necessities for survival and comfort that our present day popular tiny houses do.Have you ever wondered what those early homes were like? \nJoin us for an informative and entertaining evening with music\, photos and stories as we learn about life in those early tents\, soddies and homestead shacks. John Robinson\, Principal Designer at Robinson Residential Design\, designed and built Regina’s first Tiny House. This Tiny House was displayed at the 2016 Home and Garden Show and featured on a HGTV episode\, “Journey to the Jamboree”. John would be the first to say that it wasn’t actually Regina’s FIRST tiny house\, so his talk will provide a fun and interactive look back at some of the tiny homes that the earliest settlers of our province lived in. \nRefreshments provided. DESCRIPTION:Join James Youck during Heritage Week as he presents a brief history of the College Avenue Campus\, and a more detailed description of how this rich sociological and architectural history embodied by Collegiate Gothic style affect the design process for the College Avenue Campus Renewal. The challenge of renovation\, restoration\, and addition to the heritage campus in a modern context will be presented. An overview of the analysis of the site and existing architecture will be reviewed in the context of the strategies\, interpretation\, and solutions arrived at by the design team.\n\nJames Youck is an Architect and Principal at the P3Architecture Partnership (P3A). James is a graduate of the Carleton School of Architecture and holds a second degree in the History of Art and Architecture from the University of Saskatchewan. He is the Design Director for the College Avenue Campus project and is responsible for coordination of the design for the CAC Renewal.\nP3A are leading a team that includes experts in heritage restoration including Donald Luxton and Associates.\n\nRefreshments provided. Archives Week showcases the role archives and archivists play in preserving and making available Saskatchewan’s documentary heritage. SUMMARY:The Canadian Pacific Railway and the Founding of Regina
DESCRIPTION:The founding of Regina in 1882 followed a pattern that dates back to the earliest days of European settlement in North America: the creation of towns (and future cities in some cases) by an individual or some organized body\, rather than by the settlers when they arrived. In Regina’s case it was the Canadian Pacific Railway that founded our city. \nSo why was Regina located on a flat and cheerless plain\, with a small meandering creek its only visible water supply?   \nWhen the CPR laid out the townsite why did it make the streets so narrow and the lots so small? \nAnd with so little natural beauty\, why was Regina chosen to become the capital of the North-West Territories?  \n  \nOn January 24\, Dr. Bill Brennan will explain how Regina came to be. \n  \nBill has written the most detailed history of our city: Regina: An Illustrated History. He has also published articles about Regina in scholarly journals such as Prairie Forum\, Saskatchewan History and the Urban History Review. \n  \nRefreshments will be provided.
