DESCRIPTION:100 years ago\, the world was at war. As the guns were silenced and the men retuned home\, they brought with them a disease unlike any other. Grown and matured in the trenches of Europe\, The Spanish Influenza became humanity’s deadliest disease\, killing between 25 – 100 million people worldwide. In October of 1918 the flu arrived in Regina\, killing hundreds and infecting thousands. \nThis presentation explores the origins of the Spanish Flu\, what happened in the fall of 1918 in Regina and its legacy. \nPresented by Kenton de Jong\, founder of the Regina Spanish Influenza Memorial. \nIntermission refreshments provided.

SUMMARY:The Confederation / Davin Fountain Restoration - 2018 Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:  \nConfederation Fountain\, constructed in 1928 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Canada\, is situated at the center of Confederation Park in the Regina Exhibition Grounds. Constructed in 1928\, it featured shaped piers with ornamental caryatids\, lion heads and Saskatchewan and City of Regina shields. Originally\, sixteen cast zinc frog spitters createdan extravaganza of arched water spray in this prairie park. \nBy 2013\, with the original construction deteriorated and the water works long lost\, a Conservation Plan was commissioned. Based on this Conservation Plan\, under the prime consultancy of AECOM with Barry McGinn\, the fountain column\, wrought iron fence and cast iron bowls were restored and the original water spray design reinstated with the local fabrication of cast ironconcrete frog spitters. \nBarry McGinn\, a past director of Heritage Regina\, will use his wealth of knowledge and experience as a conservation architect and engineer to share his involvement in the Confederation Fountain conservation project. Barry will also introduce a conservation plan\, prepared in 2010\, for the Davin Fountain which was originally located at the center of Victoria Park – perhaps Regina’s next historic fountain project. \nPresented by Barry McGinn. \nRefreshments provided. SUMMARY:Catalogue Houses - 2018 Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:A century ago\, with our flourishing farms and urban centers\, there was a high demand for new homes. Designers and skilled trades people were in short supply. Eaton’s\, Sears and Aladdin Homes shipped thousands of homes to the Prairies by rail and they were assembled by local labour. Similar to the way we order on-line today\, these kit homes could be ordered to exact specifications. Millwork\, plumbing fixtures and even furniture could be included with your shipment. Heritage Regina\, supported by the Civic Museum of Regina and narrated by John Robinson\, will present the story of these early homes\, with original advertising posters\, catalogues and artifacts. \nJohn Robinson has been in the architectural design and drafting profession since 1977\, after obtaining a diploma in Architectural Engineering Technology. With 40 years of experience in single family\, multi-family and commercial drawing production\, he is still passionate about good design. In 1996\, John incorporated Robinson Residential Design\, a firm providing customized residential design and drafting services to home owners\, builders and developers. John’s design projects have been featured on HGTV as well as several local TV documentaries. John’s interest in heritage architecture began early\, growing up in a home that was ordered from an Aladdin catalogue.. Over the years he has amassed a collection of original home catalogues dating back to 1889 which are a continuing source of inspiration for restorations and new heritage sensitive infill housing designs. \nRefreshments provided. SUMMARY:The Spanish Flu Epidemic - 2018 Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:The Spanish Influenza was humanity’s deadliest disease. Incubated in the trenches of Europe\, it would spread throughout the globe\, killing young\, healthy men and women. It orphaned a generation\, slaughtered a population and brought society to a standstill. The virus would kill between 50 and 100 million people. Venture back to the autumn of 1918 when the Spanish Flu\narrived in Saskatchewan and experience history’s forgotten plague for yourself. Vaccination is not required. \nKenton de Jong is a local blogger and writer with a passion for history. In 2017\, he spearheaded a project to recognize Regina’s 330 Spanish Influenza victims and erected a memorial at the Regina Cemetery in their honour. \nJohn Robinson has been in the architectural design and drafting profession since obtaining his diploma in Architectural Engineering Technology in 1977. His firm\, Robinson Residential Design\, provides customized design and drafting services. SUMMARY:Why Prohibition Failed in Saskatchewan - 2018 Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:In Saskatchewan\, the “war to the death between the church and the saloon”\, as a clergyman called it\, began in December 1907 with the formation of the Social and Moral Reform Council of Saskatchewan. In 1915 the Saskatchewan people voted to abolish the government liquor stores and adopt Provincial prohibition. Provincial laws against the consumption of booze did not make Saskatchewan “dry” since the Saskatchewan government did not control the nations breweries and distilleries. Saskatchewan residents found ways to import booze from neighbouring provinces. Prohibition also spawned criminal activities\, such as “rum-runners” and “export houses” to meet the needs of bootleggers and their thirsty customers. \nOn February 27\, Dr. Bill Brennan\, an accomplished local historian\, will explain how prohibition failed in Saskatchewan. Come to this lecture to experience what it would have been like to live in Saskatchewan during the prohibition era. Those in attendance will be encouraged to celebrate the 1924 end to prohibition with a free drink at the Hotel Saskatchewan following the lecture. \nPresented by Dr. Bill Brennan. \nRefreshments provided. DESCRIPTION:Join Heritage Consultant Donald Luxton for an illustrated talk on the historic College Avenue Campus\, including its history\, decline and current renewal. The history of the site dates back to the establishment of Regina College in 1911\, the subsequent construction of Darke Hall and the establishment of the University of Regina. Long neglected\, this significant Collegiate Gothic campus is undergoing a comprehensive five-year rehabilitation that will result in a complete renewal\, including its historic interior spaces. This talk will cover all aspects of the project including the work completed to date\, and that anticipated over the next three years. \nDonald Luxton is the principal of a leading western Canadian heritage and cultural resource management firm\, and over the last thirty years his wide-ranging career has included the development of municipal planning programs\, the restoration of numerous heritage buildings and the development of many significant cultural facilities. Donald’s expertise\, interest and accomplishments as an author\, educator and practitioner have been recognized and acknowledged through numerous awards\, including the Heritage Canada Achievement Award in 2003 and a number of literary prizes including a BC Book Prize in 2004. \nHe is currently acting as the Heritage Consultant for the College Avenue Renewal. \nRefreshments provided. DESCRIPTION:Regina’s first tiny house was actually built 135 years ago\, it provided the basic necessities for survival and comfort that our present day popular tiny houses do.Have you ever wondered what those early homes were like? \nJoin us for an informative and entertaining evening with music\, photos and stories as we learn about life in those early tents\, soddies and homestead shacks. John Robinson\, Principal Designer at Robinson Residential Design\, designed and built Regina’s first Tiny House. This Tiny House was displayed at the 2016 Home and Garden Show and featured on a HGTV episode\, “Journey to the Jamboree”. John would be the first to say that it wasn’t actually Regina’s FIRST tiny house\, so his talk will provide a fun and interactive look back at some of the tiny homes that the earliest settlers of our province lived in. \nRefreshments provided. DESCRIPTION:A new public lecture series at the University of Regina will mark the 150th Anniversary of Confederation and the birth of Canada in 1867. The Canada 150 Lecture Series: The Making of Canada features six lectures over four days\, starting on January 19 with Canadian historian Christopher Moore’s lecture: “A Living Tree? Canada’s Constitution 150 Years Ago – and Today.” Moore has been called Canada’s most versatile writer of history. The Toronto-based writer has been presenting Canadian history to non-specialist audiences through many media for 20 years. \nMore than recounting events leading to Confederation in 1867\, the series of six lectures will reflect on the spirit and principles of the original dreams of the founders of Canada. Speakers include Prof. James Daschuk and Prof Sylvain Rehault from the University of Regina\, Darren Prefontaine from the Gabriel Dumont Institute\, and master of ceremonies Frank Korvemaker\, and characters from the ‘Trial of Louis Riel’ play. Archives Week showcases the role archives and archivists play in preserving and making available Saskatchewan’s documentary heritage. SUMMARY:The Canadian Pacific Railway and the Founding of Regina
DESCRIPTION:The founding of Regina in 1882 followed a pattern that dates back to the earliest days of European settlement in North America: the creation of towns (and future cities in some cases) by an individual or some organized body\, rather than by the settlers when they arrived. In Regina’s case it was the Canadian Pacific Railway that founded our city. \nSo why was Regina located on a flat and cheerless plain\, with a small meandering creek its only visible water supply?   \nWhen the CPR laid out the townsite why did it make the streets so narrow and the lots so small? \nAnd with so little natural beauty\, why was Regina chosen to become the capital of the North-West Territories?  \n  \nOn January 24\, Dr. Bill Brennan will explain how Regina came to be. \n  \nBill has written the most detailed history of our city: Regina: An Illustrated History. He has also published articles about Regina in scholarly journals such as Prairie Forum\, Saskatchewan History and the Urban History Review. \n  \nRefreshments will be provided.
