SUMMARY:Regina In 1912: The Mawson Plan And Its Cultural Context
DESCRIPTION:Wascana Park\, long regarded as the “jewel” of Regina\, evolved from humble beginnings to become one of the largest urban parks in North America. \nFrequently credited as an inspiration for the park\, Thomas Mawson’s plan for Regina included picturesque urban “vistas” and a system of radial roads leading to a vibrant downtown at the city’s “heart”. By 1912\, cultural forces such as the rise of the automobile and radical innovations in arts\, literature and fashion would begin to deconstruct the centralist paradigms of the past and alter what had become the typical North American city. \n\nThis interactive event will explore the influences which shaped Mawson’s practice and bring to life the diverse sights and sounds of Regina in 1912 through images\, discussion and popular sing-along tunes of the era. \nAlex MacDonald is an Associate Professor of English\nat Campion College\, University of Regina. He teaches 19th and 20th century literature\, and a Humanities course in utopian literature and thought. His research interests also include popular songs in relation to literature. He has written and presented two one-person plays in the Regina International Fringe Theatre Festival.
